but why tamaki? |
go back
So, Tamaki. It was actually awfully easy for me to pick a favorite character from Ouran, I believe it took me less than a volume to fall head over heels for the boy. That doesn't happen to me always, some characters take longer for me to point out as favorites-- but with Tamaki it was pretty much instantaneous.
I've learnt through the years that honest happy-go-lucky noble characters with good intentions can be as interesting and complex as any angsty tortured antagonist, sometimes even more. In my opinion, that's the case with Tamaki. He's an amazingly rich character, in all respects. Not because he's got a façade that hides his true nature... no, Tamaki acts like he feels, there are never hidden intentions to his acts. That's one of the things that makes him so special, in my opinion.
It's true that he's got a quite tragic past (and present, since the situation still remains), but it's not something he hides from people. If someone asks, he will tell (like he did with Haruhi). It's a part of him, but it's not something that determines who he is... it's something he lives with, just as everything that happens in his life. There's no deep tortured soul inside Tamaki, what you see is was you get. That's something that also makes him an incredibly strong person... which probably sounds really ironic given just how easily his feelings are hurt by Haruhi, Kyouya or really, anybody.
But Tamaki has truly wonderful abilities. I adore his sense of justice, his honest desire to help anyone who may need it, without asking anything in return... how he wishes for something as simple as having fun with his friends. He doesn't think ill of anybody or has any prejudices right off the bat... and has such sharp empathy that blows people away. Some Ouran fans forget about this, but despite his naiveness and child-like way of behaving, Tamaki is a really intelligent and smart young man... he observes things really close, is curious to boot and cares to understand people, which is funny considering just how little he understands himself sometimes.
Despite being so outspoken about his good qualities, he really is oblivious to some of his feelings... probably because he's too worried about others to consider himself. He's quite the contradiction. So seemingly egoistic, but holding such pure and honest reasons for everything he does. I can't understand people not seeing his complexity just because he wears his heart on his sleeve.
Considering all this, it's not surprising that I'd want to run his fanlisting and maybe add a little information about him in it. I'm really quite the character junkie, on top of all -- I feel more strongly for them than I feel for series or relationships. I guess that's just who I am too.
