The Mugiwara Kaizoku-dan has been shaped during more than 40 volumes of One Piece and it'll be still growing, by the looks of it. It all comes back to a single boy's - Monkey D. Luffy's - dream, which was to gather a group of nakama (comrades, friends) he could blindy trust in and together manage to obtain the greatest treasure of them all, the One Piece, and become the Pirate King.

What makes Luffy's crew so special, is their capacity to believe in one another and to risk their lives for any of the crew members. They hold absolute trust for their captain and would die for him if necessary, just as Luffy would do for them.
