Lately I've been realizing that, well, my OTPs don't make a whole lot of sense put together, according to human logic. Or at least it looks like that. I swear I don't choose them randomly though... they choose me randomly, or something. So, why am I so drawn, to the point of unhealthy obsession, to Luffy & Nami? For starters, Luffy is my favorite character of the series hands down. He's honest, noble, protective of his friends, true to his beliefs and would do anything for the people he cares about. He's got a strong sense of what's right and wrong, and judges people really well. I believe every relationship he shares with each one of his crew is beautiful and unique. However, no matter how un-romantic One Piece looks like most of the time, I can't help but think that Luffy & Nami's relationship has a special something that makes them as potentially plausible to be involved romantically as any other pairing, or maybe more. Their unbreakable bond of trust is undeniable, and something they had to work hard to obtain -- since Nami had big trust and pirate issues when they first met. It takes Luffy very little to ask her to join the crew and to begin trusting her. His determination is such, he never ever doubts or suspects her from that moment onwards. Not even when everything pointed to Nami betraying the crew. She is already Luffy's navigator, and she'll always be. In exchange, Nami is moved by Luffy like by no other. She may get confused or frustrated by his personality, but she trusts his judgement and she believes in him without any shade of doubt (just as much as he does). The foundation of this being the Arlong Park incident, their relationship has done nothing but grow through time -- sharing a kind of familiarity and affinity that's always a joy to watch. So why do I like them together? I guess it's all those touching moments and shared experiences combined, the way they interact, how well they know each other, all the trust they put in the other... for me, it doesn't get any better than that. And it doesn't take that much to bring all that onto the next level, either. |
