Chiaki Shinichi is a 3rd year student in Momogaoka Music Academy, he's the top piano student there, but also an excellent violin player. However, ever since he was a kid residing in Europe, conducting has been his real dream, just as his mentor Sebastiano Viera. Unfortunately for him, he's forced to stay in Japan due to a fear of flying and sailing he developed after an emergency landing during his trip from Austria when he was 12.

And thus, Chiaki finds himself "trapped", frustrated and resigned to never be able to achieve his dream. That is, until he happens to meet one brilliant -even if sloppy- piano player called Noda Megumi -- Nodame, for short.
